Riverside Avondale: Urban serenity and posh surroundings
Lying just to the west of the St. Johns River after it swings through downtown Jacksonville, the picturesque neighborhoods of Riverside and Avondale lie adjacent to one another and the river.
After the great fire destroyed most of Downtown Jacksonville in 1901 the development of Riverside and Avondale accelerated. With oak-canopied streets and a row of great mansions, Riverside Avenue was admired as Jacksonville’s most elegant residential street.
With the influx of building tradesmen who came to the city after the Great Fire, Riverside became a laboratory for aspiring architects and competing residential fashions. There are many architectural styles including: Colonial Revival, Georgian, Shingle Style, Queen Anne/Victorian, Bungalow and Tudor styles. In fact, Riverside Avenue boasted having more houses designed in the Prairie Style of architecture than any other street outside the Midwest, where Frank Lloyd Wright popularized it.
Riverside and Avondale also have a plethora of shopping districts, including funky Five Points for a great urban experience, the historic Shoppes of Avondale, the growing entertainment and dining options along the Park & King area , and the Stockton shops.
In 2010, Riverside Avondale was honored by the American Planning Association (APA) as one of the country’s 10 Great Neighborhoods under the APA’s Great Places in America program. Riverside Avondale is the first neighborhood in Florida to receive this prestigious national recognition.
