San Marco is characterized by Spanish/Mediterranean style architecture and some exceptional waterfront properties. It lies along the St. Johns River to the south of Downtown.
The heart of San Marco is San Marco Square, an upscale shopping district and home to Theatre Jacksonville, America’s longest running community theatre. There are many shops and restaurants in the square and the area is very bike-able and walk-able for its residents.
There are also many parks throughout the residential sections that residents use for running and walking their dogs.
The San Marco Preservation Society was formed in 1975 as a non-profit corporation to protect the integrity of San Marco’ residential neighborhood and to enhance the revitalization of the business district. Its’ many active members have succeeded in keeping the old-world charm and character of San Marco intact. San Marco Preservation. They also have an annual Christmas Tour of Homes that is fun to do and a great way to meet residents to see if this is the area for you!
This is one of the more expensive areas of town as far as real estate values go, so expect to pay a good deal for a home here that would cost less in another area of Jacksonville.
