St. Nicholas: A blend of urban charm & suburban living
St. Nicholas is characterized by large historic homes, many along the St. Johns River. The area is located on the river just to the east of San Marco. It is a small community along the river off Beach Boulevard, and one of the oldest areas of Jacksonville. The Spanish considered building a fort on this southern shore of the St. Johns River as early as 1740, when British General James Oglethorpe of Georgia (founder of Savannah) was preparing to invade the region. Actual construction did not occur until after 1783, when the Spanish regained the territory following twenty years of British control. Later the Spanish fortified San Nicolas making it a strategic battery for guarding the river crossing, as well as an important northerly point of defense for St. Augustine.
Old oaks dripping with Spanish moss and quiet well kept streets make this pocket community stand out. The closest commercial is along Beach Boulevard and San Marco square. There are a diversity of businesses in these areas. If you are looking for a home on the river, this may be the community for you.
